Broken Gas Line Sparks Explosion, Large Fire In Flint

FLINT (AP) -- Authorities say a damaged gas line on a bridge reconstruction project has sparked a large fire and closed stretches of a road and freeway in Flint.

Consumers Energy spokesman Brian Wheeler said that a worker struck an underground gas pipe late Saturday morning while working on the project at Interstate 69 and Dort Highway. The leaking gas started a fire that has burned for a couple hours.

The explosion has forced the closing of I-69 and Dort in the area.

Police tell The Flint Journal that two people were injured but provided no further information. The Associated Press has left messages for city and state transportation officials.

Wheeler says utility crews are working to fix the leaks by late afternoon.
