Brita Recalls Children's Water Bottles Over Laceration Hazard

DETROIT (WWJ) - About 250,000 water bottles for children manufactured by Brita are being recalled.

Consumer Product Safety Commission Chairman Elliott Kaye said the lids can develop cracks and potentially cut a child. Brita has received 35 reports of lids breaking or cracking, although no injuries have been reported.

The recall covers four types of hard-sided plastic children's water bottles that are adorned with popular cartoon characters. The bottles stand 6 inches tall, hold 15 ounces of liquid, have white lids that screw off and have fold-up straws and filters that sit inside the straw below the lid.

Each bottle bears a Brita logo and features the image of a popular children's cartoon character: Dora the Explorer on a violet bottle; Hello Kitty on a pink bottle ; SpongeBob Square Pants on a blue bottle; and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on a green bottle.

The bottles were sold at retailers nationwide -- including Walmart, Target, and Amazon.com -- from June 2013 through July 2014 for about $13 to $19.

Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled water bottles and contact Brita to receive a postage-paid shipping package to return the bottles for a full refund.
