Boy Charged In Baby Cousin's Beating Death Not Competent For Trial

MUSKEGON, Mich. (AP) - A boy who authorities say fatally beat his 16-month-old cousin after the girl's mother left them home alone has been found incompetent to stand trial.

The boy, who recently turned 14, is charged with an open count of murder in the February death of A'Laina Brown at the girl's home in Muskegon Township. Authorities say the Muskegon Heights teen told police he shoved A'Laina, kicked her hard and struck her head.

The Associated Press isn't naming him because of his age.

The Muskegon Chronicle says a report from the Michigan Center for Forensic Psychiatry indicates the boy can't understand court proceedings or assist in his defense. His lawyer requested the review.

A judge accepted the finding Tuesday. He'll get treatment and the finding will be reviewed in about two months.
