Bone-Chilling Temps Shut Down Detroit People Mover
DETROIT (WWJ) - Those without transportation in Detroit are dealing with yet another obstacle as frigid temperatures have forced officials to shut down the People Mover.
An advisory sent early Tuesday morning said the People Mover would be closed until further notice, due to "extreme temperatures and the wind chill factor."
Officials say they will continue to monitor the weather conditions and once those improve, they'll consider reopening the People Mover.
Average temperatures across metro Detroit Tuesday morning were hovering at more than 10 below zero, with a wind chill of minus 35. Forecasters say the wind chill will remain between 15 and 25 degrees below zero throughout the day Tuesday.
A Wind Chill Warning, issued by the National Weather Service, remains in effect until 7 a.m. Wednesday for the entire Southeast Michigan area. A Winter Weather Advisory also remains in effect until 10 p.m. Tuesday.
A Wind Chill Warning means the combination of very cold air and strong winds will create dangerously low wind chill values. This could result in frostbite and lead to hypothermia or death if precautions are not taken.
