Bold Thief Swipes $80,000 Maserati From Troy Dealership

A fake loan -- and a lot of nerve -- helped an Illinois man steal a Maserati from a Troy auto dealer.

Police say the man bought the $82,000 dollar sports car from Suburban Maserati with a Bank of American loan obtained with a stolen identity.

The suspect went so far as to have the 2014 Maserati GranTurismo shipped to Illinois at a Walmart parking lot, saying his neighborhood street was too small for the delivery truck.

The vehicle was listed for sale in an ad on Auto Trader, according to Troy police.

The man provided a photocopy of his Illinois driver's license, police said, and had gotten approved for credit to purchase the vehicle through Bank of America.

He asked the shipper to drop off the Maserati in the parking lot of a Walmart, saying the street he lived on was too small to accommodate the truck carrying the sports car.

After the transaction was complete, Bank of America contacted the dealership. The buyer had fraudulently obtained the loan using another person's personal identity.

"The business also received payment from the suspect for $1,026.40 to pay for the Michigan State Tax which they now feel was probably done with a fraudulent check," says a press release from Troy police.
