Body Found Of Man Who Attempted Lake Erie Rescue

ERIE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — Authorities have recovered the body of a 34-year-old Detroit man who disappeared in Lake Erie while trying to rescue two boys who were having trouble making it back to shore.

The Monroe County sheriff's department says that Juan A. Layva and another man took their sons fishing Sunday morning. The site is near the CMS Energy Corp. Whiting power plant in Erie Township, just north of the Ohio state line.

The department says the 12- and 13-year-old boys went swimming but encountered an off-shore current.

It says Layva began swimming toward the boys but also had trouble.

The department says a La Salle Township Fire Department boat rescued the boys.

Sheriff Dale Malone says his dive team found Layva's body about 10:30 a.m. Monday.
