Boat Shop Fire Near Kalamazoo Destroys $250K Of Inventory

PLAINWELL, Mich. (AP) - The owner of a boat shop north of Kalamazoo says a fire has destroyed the marina and more than $250,000 in inventory.

The Kalamazoo Gazette reports a passerby spotted the fire about 8 p.m. Sunday, three hours after employees left the boat shop near Plainwell.

Pat Cooper, who owns the shop on Pine Lake with his brother, says about 6,000 items that had already been sold online were destroyed. Among items lost in the fire was a 1928 racing motor.

Cooper says investigators believe the fire started in the workshop area, but a cause has not been determined.

The shop opened in 1928. The brothers plan to rebuild.
