Bloomfield Township Police Investigate Identity Theft Of 6-Year-Old Girl

BLOOMFIELD TWP. (WWJ) - Police in Bloomfield Township are investigating a disturbing case of identity theft involving a 6-year-old girl.

Authorities say a man came into the police station earlier this month to report that someone had apparently stolen his child's identity. The man told police that someone used his daughter's Social Security number to open utility accounts at several addresses in the city of Detroit under the girl's name. When the utility bills went unpaid, the debts were recorded on the little girl's credit history.

The case is under investigation, but police say it's a good reminder for everyone to check credit reports for themselves and their family members on a regular basis -- no matter how young the person may be.

Anyone who might have information on the case is urged to contact police at 248-433-7755.
