Blight Removal Efforts Planned For Detroit's Brightmoor Area

DETROIT (AP) - About two dozen blighted homes on Detroit's northwest side are expected to be razed and scores of lots cleared as part of a project paid for with private donations.

Mayor Mike Duggan said Thursday at a news conference that the $600,000 effort in Detroit's Brightmoor neighborhood is "another step in rebuilding the city."

Contributors are being made by the Max M. and Marjorie Fisher Foundation, which gave $500,000, and Ajax Paving, which has pledged $100,000.

The focus is on blighted homes and lots around Samuel Gompers Elementary School, which Duggan says deserves attention because the school "is the path to success for the young people who are growing up here."

The city has removed roughly 200 vacant homes and other buildings in the neighborhood.
