Black History: App Creator Offers New Way To Coupon

WWJ Newsradio 950 celebrates Black History Month by recognizing local young African American professionals and their heroes.

DETROIT (WWJ) - Kenneth Jones of Troy really has a love for saving money using coupons everywhere he goes — so he created a free mobile app called "The Cheap Chimp" to do just that.

According to Jones, his app is the only one on the market that offers coupon discounts for retailers, restaurants and grocery stores.

His reason for ditching the old-school approach and going digital?

"I used to carry around a tin can of coupons," Jones told WWJ's Stephanie Davis. "I wanted something that was more convenient, that was less embarrassing. So I thought if I could have it on my mobile phone since that what I always carry, why not have that option."

Several hundred people have already downloaded The Cheap Chimp.

Jones says that he wants to encourage and promote fiscal responsibility, and just help people save money.

He says several hundred people have already downloaded the app.

Jones' inspiration in black history is a man he says helped change the face of society.

The person that inspires me most would be Malcolm X," he said. "Not just because he fought for what he believed in, but his ability to reinvent himself."
