CBS DETROIT - No. 12 Michigan and No. 22 Michigan State both earned first-round byes in this year's Big Ten tournament, and both teams will take the floor for their first tournament games Friday.

Michigan, the No. 1 seed, will play noon Friday against the winner of No. 8 seed Indiana and No. 9 seed Illinois. The Wolverines closed out their season on a five-game win streak, sealing the regular season championship outright for their first time since 1986.

Michigan State, the No. 3 seed, will play around 9 p.m. Friday against the winner of No. 6 seed Iowa and No. 11 seed Northwestern. The Spartans, heavily favored in the conference at the beginning of the season, struggled to cope with the effects of injury and illness this season. They ended the year by losing three of their last four games.

The in-state rivals could face each other a third time this season if both make it to the tournament championship game. Michigan (23-7, 15-3 Big Ten) swept the regular season series and has won six out of the last eight against Michigan State (23-8, 12-6 Big Ten). The championship game will take place at 3:30 p.m. Sunday on CBS.
