If you're not on a budget, check out Van Boven, located in the heart of downtown Ann Arbor near the corner of State St. and North University, in Nickels Arcade. It's open Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and noon to 5 p.m. on Sundays. Van Boven is a great spot for menswear. The store was first opened in 1921, by Peter Van Boven, Sr., who was a UM student and baseball team captain during that year; after he graduated, he went into retail and opened the shop. Van Boven sells suits, blazers, sport coats, slacks, ties, jeans and more.

The Shirt Box sells men's furnishing and accessories and is a great place to shop for work clothes. Located in Farmington Hills on Northwestern, The Shirt Box was ranked #9 of 26 stores by the Detroit A-List. The shop sells dress shirts, ties, casual slacks, button-up shirts and more and tends to sell them at less than retail price. The store opened in December 1981, and it often announces deals on its Facebook page, so make sure to check it before you go.

The Peacock Room is located inside the historic Park Shelton building, in Midtown, near Wayne State University. Free parking is available in its attached parking structure, with validation. The Peacock Room is closed on Mondays, but it is open 11:30 a.m. to 7 p.m., Tuesdays through Saturdays, and 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays. Rachel Lutz, the owner, sells women's clothing and accessories; they also sell some men's accessories (wallets, etc.). The store has a sister store, Frida, close by as well.

As you may have guessed by its name, the Royal Oak Dress Boutique can be found near the corner of 11 Mile Road and Center St., in the middle of downtown Royal Oak. The store carries "fashion dresses," which would be good for work clothing, as well as formal dresses, accessories and more casual wear (jeans, leggings, etc.). If Royal Oak is too far of a drive, check out the website, too, which includes a wide selection of dresses and skirts; you can also save 20% off at checkout by "liking" the Facebook page.

The Black Dress Co. sells custom clothing and can make items to your own specifications. It caters to an older clientele, but younger women can find dresses and accessories there as well. The store sells more casual workwear (fitted shirts and pants), but also dresses, skirts and accessories to match. The Black Dress Co. is located in Midtown, between Woodward and John R. The store opened in 2008 by a mother-daughter team, who originally had a home-based sewing business.
