Best Pierogies In Detroit

When most people in the Detroit area think of Polish food, we think of Hamtramck. However, there are many other restaurants in the metro area where you can get your pierogie fix, as well. Check out this list for the best in metro Detroit.
Christine's Cuisine
729 E. Nine Mile Road
Ferndale, MI 48220
(248) 584-3354
christinescuisineinc.com

Christine's Cuisine is located in a small strip mall near the corner of 9 Mile and Woodward, and could easily be overlooked; however, its European cuisine is very good, including its pierogies. "Baba's Pierogies" includes a cheddar cheese and potato filling. They are deep-fried and finished with caramelized onions, with sour cream on the side. You can also ask for them to be pan-fried or boiled if you prefer that over deep-fried. You can choose from a 1/2 dozen ($6.50) or a dozen ($11.50). If you're very hungry, go for the combo plate, which includes 3 pierogies, grilled sausage, kapusta (sauerkraut), grilled rye bread and sour cream ($9.50).

Amadeus
122 E. Washington St.
Ann Arbor, MI 48104
(734) 665-8767
www.amadeusrestaurant.com

Amadeus can be found at the corner of E. Washington St. and 4th St. in downtown Ann Arbor. The restaurant is housed in a restored 1876 building. The restaurant has outside dining options when the weather is optimal (ie, spring/summer), as well as its indoor seating area. You can order its pierogies off its appetizer menu - three for $5 or six for $9 - with your choice of sweet cheese, pork, mushroom, potato/American cheese, sauerkraut or potato/farmer cheese filling and garnished with sour cream. Another option would be to order the Pierogi Plate, which also includes a garden salad and rolls ($13), garnished with bread crumbs and sour cream. Amadeus is an Eastern European restaurant, and you can find other delicacies on the menu as well, such as potato pancakes, schnitzel and kielbasa.

Polonia
2934 Yemans St.
Hamtramck, MI 48212
(313) 873-8432
www.polonia-restaurant.net

It would be criminal not to include any Hamtramck places for best pierogies, and Polonia is a good place to start. Anthony Bourdain filmed an episode of No Reservations here in 2009. Polonia's food is great. Depending on your appetite, you can order five pierogies for $6.50, which are filled with potato, cheese and sauerkraut; if you're hungrier, get the Polish combination plate (stuffed cabbage with tomato sauce, sausage, 2 pierogies, mashed potato with gravy and sauerkraut; $8.95) or the Polish Trio Dish ($6.95) which includes two pierogies, two pancakes and Polish fresh sausage, which can also be eaten as an appetizer. If you're a senior citizen, Polonia has a special deal for you too; they have "senior citizen dinners" ($7.95) which are served daily after 4 p.m.
