Bernard Kilpatrick On Supervised Release After Time In Prison, Halfway House

DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - The father of ex-Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick is on supervised release following time in prison and a halfway house for his tax crime conviction tied to a City Hall corruption probe.

The Detroit News report Friday's update, from federal prison officials and 73-year-old Bernard Kilpatrick's defense lawyer, came about four months after he was released from a Texas federal prison into a Dallas-area halfway house.

In January, 2014, Bernard Kilpatrick reported for prison where he served nearly 10 months of his 15-month sentence for submitting a false tax return by failing to disclose $180,000 in income.

He must still must serve one year of supervised release and pay $62,000 to the Internal Revenue Service.

Bernard Kilpatrick sold himself as a savvy consultant who could help people cut through red tape if they wanted to bid on city business, the government said. He declared income of $1.3 million while his son was mayor and made more than $600,000 in cash deposits, according to evidence.

A jury cleared the elder Kilpatrick or couldn't reach a verdict on more serious charges during a corruption trial alongside Kwame Kilpatrick and Detroit contractor Bobby Ferguson — although U.S. District Judge Nancy Edmunds said the elder Kilpatrick was involved in acts of extortion during his son's time as mayor.

Meantime, Kwame Kilpatrick remains behind bars in a federal prison in Texas, serving 28 years for racketeering conspiracy and other crimes. The government said he raked in cash through rigged contracts and bribes.
