Belleville High School Football Not Canceled, Principal Says After Misunderstanding Over Locker Room Wedgie

BELLEVILLE, Mich. (WWJ) - A Wayne County high school is putting out the word that their homecoming game has not been canceled — despite rumors circulating on social media.

It all started, school officials said, when a Belleville High School football player got a wedgie from one of his teammates in the locker room.

Principal Abdul Madyun said they decided to have a discussion with the small group of teens involved.

"We were trying to those kids about that things in programs get out of control, people can do things they shouldn't," he told WWJ Newsradio 950's Zahra Huber.

"We talked about that a season is not promised, nor is a game promised — that type of conversation. The next thing we knew, I guess the kids took from that conversation that we'd just canceled the season, and they started tweeting out that the season had been canceled."

But Madyun is stressing that the homecoming game, dance and football season will go on as planned.

He adds that social media can be a dangerous thing, saying he plans to sit down with students to talk about the issue.

"Even though that there was no evidence to say the administration was getting rid of homecoming, the power of social media — for the students to be able to take this and re-tweet it — and that became the gospel truth," Madyun said.

No student was expected to face disciplinary action over the tweets or the wedgie.
