Belle Isle Opening Accessible, Nature-Themed Playground

DETROIT (AP) - Detroit's Belle Isle Park is unveiling a playground that offers a nature theme and wide accessibility.

The playground on the island park in the Detroit River officially opens Thursday morning between the Belle Isle Nature Zoo and Lake Muskoday. Officials say it's the first playground within the 985-acre state park to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

The cost of the equipment and installation was provided by the Sigma Gamma Foundation, a Grosse Pointe-based philanthropic organization that supports Michigan children with special needs and their families.

The opening takes place after a public meeting of the Belle Isle Park Advisory Committee at the island's zoo.
