Beaumont Study Seeks Men With Prostate Cancer For Treatment

DETROIT (WWJ) - Beaumont Hospital is looking for some men with prostate cancer to take part in a breakthrough study.

Researchers at Beaumont hospitals in Royal Oak and Troy are seeking men with low and intermediate risk prostate cancer to participate in a study reports WWJ's Health Reporter Dr. Deanna Lites.

They'll be using a one-time, high dose rate radiation treatment called single fraction HDR brachytherapy.

Dr. Daniel Krauss is a radiation oncologist.

"The treatment consists of a very minimally invasive procedure followed by the actual radiation delivery to the prostate and then all the radiation is removed, so the patient is not radioactive afterward," said Krauss.

The treatment is done as an outpatient and a spinal anesthetic is used. The procedure takes a couple of hours.

No recovery time after you leave the hopsital.

And so far there have been minimal side effects from the treatment.
