Gas leak reported in Washtenaw County, authorities say

Crews repair gas rupture in Washtenaw County

Police and fire crews on Thursday responded to a reported gas leak in the Ann Arbor-Pittsfield Township area.

The University of Michigan Division of Public Safety and Security is urging people to avoid the area of W. Ellsworth and State roads. Pittsfield Township police say traffic on Ellsworth Road is closed between State Road and S. Research Park Drive.

No injuries were reported, authorities say.

According to DTE, a third-party contractor accidentally hit a gas line, causing mud and debris to fly in the air. Pittsfield Township police say fire crews are monitoring the air quality.

"DTE is also monitoring for safety and working to halt the gas leak. Gas monitor readings do not reveal any public safety hazard at this time. Initial reports of an explosion were inaccurate, and fire suppression has not been necessary," Pittsfield Township police said.

U of M says the leak is not directly impacting the university's infrastructure, but it is affecting a major traffic route.

This story is developing and will be updated as more information becomes available.
