Authorities Find Body Of Missing Kayaker

PLAINFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - Searchers have found the body of a 65-year-old Grand Rapids man who was pulled beneath an ice sheet while kayaking on the Rogue River in western Michigan's Plainfield Township.

The Kent County sheriff's office says Sunday that Thomas Shepard and 50-year-old Daniel Silverthorn were kayaking on the river when they tried to get out of their kayaks to walk over the sheet of ice.

Shepard's kayak began to take on water and he was pulled under by the current about 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

Silverthorn contacted people living in the area who called 911. Authorities called off a search Saturday night when conditions became unsafe. Shepard's body was found Sunday morning.

Neither man was wearing a flotation device.
