Authorities Seek Tips After Bald Eagle Found Shot Dead

SALEM TWP. (WWJ/AP) - Authorities are seeking information from the public after a bald eagle was found fatally shot in Washtenaw County.

The bird was found in a rural area on April 3 in Salem Township, northeast of Ann Arbor, by a resident who called the state Department of Natural Resources' poaching hotline.

Conservation officers say the bird had been dead for some time and was showing signs of decomposition. A necropsy later determined it had been shot.

Bald eagles are protected under the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act. Killing an eagle can lead to prison time and fines.

Anyone with information about the case is urged to call the Michigan Department of Natural Resources' poaching hotline at 800-292-7800.
