Author, Historian To Discuss Battle of Antietam In Monroe

MONROE, Mich. (AP) -- Southeastern Michigan's River Raisin National Battlefield Park is hosting a presentation commemorating what's known as the bloodiest one-day battle in U.S. history.

Brian Egen's talk, "Antietam National Battlefield: Commemorating America's Bloodiest Day," is scheduled for Sunday at the historic Monroe park. He plans to discuss the formation of the landscape near Sharpsburg, Maryland, that was home to the clash that left 23,000 soldiers killed, wounded or missing on Sept. 17, 1862.

Egen is executive producer at The Henry Ford in Dearborn and co-author of the book, "Michigan at Antietam: The Wolverine State's Sacrifice on America's Bloodiest Day." He's speaking at the park, which served as a landmark turning point in the War of 1812, as part of the National Park Service's Centennial Speaker Series.
