Man shot and killed by Trenton police, allegedly shot, injured club security guard

An armed suspect was shot and killed about 3 a.m. Wednesday in the parking lot of an apartment complex in Trenton, Michigan, local police said.

The suspect was a 37-year-old man, who Inkster police said was wanted after a shooting about 2 a.m. that resulted in serious injuries to a security guard at Bogarts Lounge, 30100 Michigan Ave., Inkster.

The man was asked to leave the business, Inkster police said. But he returned and got involved in what police called a "verbal exchange" with the security officer. As the security officer walked away from the suspect's vehicle, the man rolled down the passenger-side window. Inkster police said after the security officer approached the vehicle, the suspect fired a shot and struck the victim in the abdomen.

Inkster police responded to the scene, assisting the victim and getting information about what happened. They issued an alert to nearby police departments about the incident, along with a description of the suspect.

Trenton police said they learned about 2:45 a.m. that the vehicle involved, a 2022 grey Ford Edge, was tracked to the area of 3700 Van Horn Road in Trenton.

The mother of the suspect, who lives in the apartment complex, said she woke up to hear police officers giving orders for him to get out of the car. She heard shots being fired and began shouting toward them in response.

"During their encounter with the suspect, he produced a firearm. In response to this immediate threat, Trenton officers discharged their weapons, striking the suspect," the Inkster police report said.

In the meantime, the security officer who was shot was taken to an area hospital and was listed in critical condition.

None of the officers involved was injured.

The Michigan State Police Second District Special Investigation Section is handling the investigation.

"All those details are going to be investigated by Michigan State Police - how many shots fired? Who fired?" Trenton Police Chief Mike Hawkins said

"We ask the community to keep the victim and all affected families in their thoughts during this difficult time," Inkster Police Chief Tamila L. Jenkins said in her report.

Dearborn United Dispatch also assisted on this call.
