Archdiocese Of Detroit Says Child Sex Abuse Claims Against Ex-Priest Are 'Credible'

DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - The Archdiocese of Detroit says child sexual abuse allegations against a former priest have been "found to be credible."

The Catholic administrative body for southeastern Michigan made the announcement Tuesday after an internal board reviewed allegations against 85-year-old Richard Lauinger, who was ordained in 1956 and left the priesthood in 1975.

Lauinger's assignments included serving as associate pastor at Our Lady of Sorrows in Farmington, Christ the King in Detroit, Shrine of the Little Flower in Royal Oak, and St. Eugene in Detroit; and as co-pastor of St. Margaret of Scotland, St. Clair Shores.

Diocese spokesman Ned McGrath said the complaints were turned over to the Wayne and Oakland county prosecutor's offices. He did not offer any details as to when the alleged abuse took place or number of alleged victims.

McGrath said Lauinger hasn't lived in Michigan since 1985 but declined to say where he is now. The Associated Press called two phone numbers assigned to someone with the same name and age and left messages.

The Archdiocese of Detroit stresses that it places no deadlines or time limits on reporting the sexual abuse of minors by priests, deacons, and other church personnel.

Those who wish to bring forward a complaint and/or to speak to the Victim Assistance Coordinator can call 866-343-8055 or email vac@aod.org.
