Anxious Antelope Caught After Escaping Battle Creek Zoo Enclosure

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (AP) - Officials at a zoo in southern Michigan have tranquilized and captured a wayward waterbuck that escaped her 18-acre enclosure.

The animal, named Neva, was caught by Binder Park Zoo staff about 1 p.m. Tuesday after getting loose in the Wild Africa exhibit.

Zoo spokeswoman Kari Parker says the exhibit was closed to cars and trams for more than an hour Tuesday to avoid scaring the waterbuck, which only recently arrived at the Battle Creek zoo.

The waterbuck apparently became frightened and ran through a barrier meant to keep animals inside the enclosure.

Waterbucks are large antelopes that are native to Africa.
