Anti-Trump Protesters Carry Upside Down American Flag In March Down Woodward Ave.

DETROIT (WWJ) - A noisy group took to the streets of downtown Detroit Wednesday evening — stopping traffic as they demonstrated against the election of Donald Trump.

The crowd of maybe a few dozen marched down Woodward Ave. to Campus Martius park, carrying signs and an upside down American flag.

Chants were enthusiastic and varied, including: "No Trump, no KKK, no racist USA," "F*** Donald Trump, and "Not my president." Chants of "F*** the police" later rang out, as DPD patrol cars pulled up alongside and behind the crowd.

One sign read, "Love Trumps Hate," and other read,"Bigots Are Not Leaders."

Broadcasting via Facebook live from the scene at 7 p.m., Steve Neavling of Motor City Muckraker said the protest started with just a handful of people and grew quickly as word got out.

"Tonight it was a lot of anxiety, it was fear, it was anger — but it was also an opportunity for people to finally sort of come together and experess their outrage over the presidency," Neavling said, speaking live on WWJ Newsradio 950.

His crowd size estimate skewed a bit larger, to 100 to 150 people.

"There was a big diverse group of people, everyone from people of color to people who were there for religious reasons," Neavling said. "And a lot of the feelings seemed to be, you know, what do we do next? We're just, we're angry and we don't know what to do."

"But this was a crowd that wasn't going to back down when police tried to get them to get off the street," he added, "so there was definitely a lot of anger there."

Reports said officers had to shut down the streets as a result of the demonstration, but that was not confirmed by authorities. There has been no word of any violence or arrests associated with the protest.

WWJ has a call out to police for comment.

Meantime, a similar protest was held in the city's Midtown district.
