Annual Report: Michigan Roads Only Getting Worse

LANSING (WWJ) -- A new report released Monday suggests that Michigan's freeways and major roads are only getting worse.

The Michigan Transportation Asset Management Council's 2015 Roads and Bridges report shows that 84 percent of the roads are in fair or poor condition.

Only 16 percent are in good condition.

The report looks at more than 52,000 lane miles of paved roads in which the state can receive federal money for repairs. An analysis of bridge conditions shows state and local bridges are "holding their own" despite rising costs and revenue challenges.

The report shows 12 percent of bridges are structurally deficient -- unchanged from 2014.

By way of comparison with other midwest states, Michigan has a significantly higher percentage of structurally deficient bridges than other Great Lakes states, with Wisconsin having 9.1 percent, Indiana having nine percent, Illinois having 8.4 percent and Ohio having seven percent.
