Ann Arbor Expands Free Bike Light Giveaway After Deaths

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) - The city of Ann Arbor is expanding a bicycle light giveaway program in the wake of recent cycling deaths on city streets.

The Ann Arbor News reports the City Council voted Monday to allocate $1,000 for free bicycle lights. The move complements an initiative announced last week by the get Downtown Program to offer free bicycle lights and reflective gear to downtown employees.

The City Council's allocation expands the giveaway to make the lights available to residents who don't work downtown.

Fifty-four-year-old Jeffrey Jurek was killed in a crash while riding a bicycle last week around 7 p.m. in Ann Arbor. Police said the bicycle had a reflector, but no headlight.

Twenty-six-year-old Michael Curley was killed in a hit-and-run crash in the early morning of Oct. 28, and police said his bicycle also didn't have a headlight.
