Animal Control Officer Saves Dog With Mouth-To-Mouth Resuscitation
SOUTHFIELD (CBS Detroit) - One little metro Detroit dog has a hero to thank this holiday weekend.
According to officials with the Southfield Police Department, Southfield Animal Control Officer Robert White saved the life of an 11-year-old terrier mix following a fire this week.
After the dog named "Valentino" was pulled from a burning home on the 2800-block of Sutherland Street on Wednesday, police say he was alert and breathing.
But as Officer White was driving Valentino to a veterinary hospital to be checked out, the dog stopped breathing and collapsed.
White pulled his vehicle over to the side of the road and performed rescue breathing on the dog, according to police.
After performing the rescue breathing, Valentino once again began breathing on his own. The two continued on their way to the vet where Valentino spent some time in an oxygen chamber.
Police said the lucky canine is "recovering well" and was expected to go home Friday, in time to enjoy the long weekend with his family.
