Advisory: Michigan Cider Mill's Cider Tests Positive For E. Coli-Producing Toxin

ST. JOHNS, Mich. (AP) - State officials have issued a consumer advisory for apple cider produced at a mid-Michigan cider mill that could be contaminated with a toxin producing E. coli bacteria.

The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development announced Tuesday that people who bought Uncle John's Old Fashioned Apple Cider at St. Johns' Uncle John's Cider Mill should dispose of it. The advisory applies to 1,200 gallons made on Oct. 17 and sold at the mill in jugs with a sell-by date of Friday, or served to customers Oct. 18-21.

Officials say Uncle John's voluntarily stopped selling cider as it awaits more test results. No illnesses have been reported.

A random sample collected by an inspector tested positive for an E. coli-producing toxin. E. coli symptoms often include stomach cramps, diarrhea and vomiting.
