Activists Return To Site Of Massive 2010 Oil Pipeline Spill In Battle Creek
BATTLE CREEK (AP) — Activists have returned to a southwestern Michigan river to commemorate the 5-year anniversary of the Enbridge Energy oil spill.
Organizers say events included a walk Saturday along the Kalamazoo River near Battle Creek.
The Enbridge spill released more than 800,000 gallons of oil from a broken pipeline in 2010. It spoiled approximately 40 miles of the Kalamazoo River and Talmadge Creek. State regulators say any remaining oil is minimal and at the bottom of the river or in the banks.
Enbridge has agreed to restore or create 300 acres of wetlands to improve the Kalamazoo River watershed. The company also will continue monitoring the impact of the spill and spend $75 million on various projects in the area.
