Accused Serial Rapist Charged Home Invasion, Sex Assault In Garden City

GARDEN CITY (WWJ) - An alleged serial rapist has been arraigned on charges on sex assault and home invasion charges.

Ikeie Smith, 32, of Redford Township — who was arrested Thursday in Dearborn after years on the run — was charged with one count of home invasion, first degree; three counts of criminal sexual conduct, first degree; and one count of criminal sexual conduct, second degree.

According to court records, last November Smith allegedly broke into a family's home in Garden City and raped a woman who was sleeping in the living room. Police preserved that DNA, and when Dearborn police arrested him Thursday they were able to connect him to the other alleged crimes.

He faced a judge in Garden City District Court Friday and was remanded back to jail.

Police say Smith was involved in a series of rapes in as many as eight jurisdictions that date back to 2011. That includes the cities of Garden City, Allen Park, Inkster, Livonia, Redford and Dearborn.

In a statement, Dearborn Police Chief Ronald Haddad praised a police and FBI task force for their efforts which he says resulted in "a very dangerous predator being taken off the streets."

As the investigation continues, police and prosecutors are actively pursuing leads that may link this suspect to other similar crimes in additional communities.
