AAA: Nearly 3.2 Million From Michigan Traveling For Holidays

DEARBORN (WWJ/AP) - AAA says nearly 3.2 million people from Michigan plan to travel 50 miles or more from home for the year-end holiday season.

The auto club says that nearly 2 percent more than last year and the highest travel volume for the holiday period in 14 years.

Most plan to be driving for the holidays, including Christmas and New Year's Day. Others making trips will take planes, buses or trains.

On a national level, the number of year-end holiday travelers is expected to top 100 million for the first time on record.

Travelers will see relatively low gas prices. According to AAA, the statewide weekly average price for a gallon of gasoline has been below the $2 per gallon mark for the past four weeks. Monday's statewide average was about $1.90, about 57 cents less than last year.

The year-end holiday travel period is defined as Wednesday, December 23, 2015 to Sunday, January 3, 2016.
