2 Arrested, 4 In Custody, 7 Held For Questioning After Armed Robbery, Standoff On Detroit's West Side

DETROIT (WWJ) - Police as many as 13 people are being investigated after an armed robbery turned into a barricaded gunman situation on Detroit's west side.

Police say offers were working an armed robbery case in the area of Springwells Street and Vernor Highway around 3 a.m. Tuesday when they received information that the suspects were in a gold SUV outside of a home on Roosevelt Street, in a neighborhood just east of West Grand Boulevard and Warren Avenue.

When officers arrived in the area, they located the two suspects and immediately placed them under arrest without further incident.

Investigators then learned that several other suspects were hiding in a nearby house. Officers surrounded the home but the suspects refused to give themselves up, so police declared the scene a barricaded gunman situation.

The SWAT team was called in and eventually made entry into the home, according to Detroit Police Commander Elvin Barren.

"These additional suspects were hiding deep in the basement," Barren told WWJ's Mike Campbell. "Our SWAT team was able to go down there and find them and get them in custody without incident."

A 13-year-old girl is said to have been involved, but it's not clear if she was connected to the initial robbery or was simply inside the home during the standoff.

Barren said investigators believe the suspects could be involved in similar crimes reported in the area.

"One handgun and two assault rifles have been recovered from this location," he said. "We got three weapons off the street and it's going to make an impact on these street robberies because these are crews that commit these robberies. When we take one down, two down, it makes an impact on our street robberies."

Police say no one was injured during the incident, which remains under investigation.
