5,000 Tulip Poplar Trees Will Take Root In Detroit On Saturday
DETROIT (WWJ) - A long-term investment in future blooms and greening of Detroit begins Saturday. It'll start with a big dig.
Hantz Woodlands is planting 5,000 large Tulip Poplar trees on the city's lower east side, with the help of volunteers, starting at 10 a.m., says spokesman Mike Score.
"They are beautiful trees," says Score, "they grow tall and straight - the canopy is way up at the top so as they get bigger they become more and more beautiful and they have a yellow flower that people can enjoy in the summertime."
With an investment of over $100,000 the plantings will be managed as a tree farm.
"John Hantz lives in Detroit near the Woodlands - it's something that makes this neighborhood more beautiful and the neighborhoods surrounding his, so by removing the blight, it gives people a reason to stay. We are managing the trees as a tree farm, so over time we should be able to get our money back. It's a 40-60 year cycle from planting to harvest; we are in it for the long haul," says Score.
The re-forestation will be in the area bordered by Mack and Jefferson Aveune - Van Dyke and St. Jean. [MAP]
