5-Year-Old Boy Drowns In Michigan Lake On Memorial Day

COLUMBIA TOWNSHIP (WWJ/AP) - Police say a 5-year-old boy drowned in a Jackson County lake on Memorial Day.

Columbia Township Police Chief David Elwell says divers recovered the boy from 15-feet-deep water Monday night.

According to a news release, witnesses and family reported the boy waded from shore, on Oakwood Beach at Vineyard Lake, to a boat where a relative was. She told the child to go back to the shore, but he continued to wade out into deeper water, police said. When he went under the woman jumped in to save him, but immediately lost sight of the child.

Police said multiple dive team units and members were on the water in boats, and diving, a short time after being dispatched to the scene at around 4 p.m. Firefighters also entered the water, forming a line to search for the victim.

The boy was pulled from the lake at around 6:30 p.m. — about two and a half hours after he went missing. Despite life-saving efforts he was pronounced dead at Henry Ford Allegiance.

The Jackson Citizen Patriot reported Tuesday that the boy was identified by police as Achilles Maxson of Columbia Township.
