5 Suspects Arrested In Shooting Of Detroit Cop During Raid

DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - Five suspects have been arrested in connection with the non-fatal shooting of an on-duty Detroit police officer on the city's west side.

The unidentified officer and others were fired upon around 11 a.m. Saturday as he approached a home, on Orangelawn and Ohio west of Grand River, with a warrant during a drug raid on the city's west side.

Police say flying shrapnel injured the officer's leg when the gunman used a "high-powered weapon" — reportedly an AR-15 — to shoot through a metal door.

WDIV-TV reported that the suspects and other officers exchanged shots and one of the men in custody was shot in the leg. Authorities said the suspected shooter, a 21-year-old man, was among the five men who were arrested.

Detroit Police Chief James Craig said the injured officer, an 18-year veteran with the department, underwent surgery at a local hospital over the weekend. He is expected to recover.

The names of those in custody were not immediately released, pending formal charges.
