4th Group Forms To Oppose Michigan Sales Tax Boost For Roads

LANSING, Mich. (AP) - A Republican political consultant who advised Gov. Rick Snyder's campaigns is leading a group opposing a May ballot proposal to fund Michigan road repairs with a sales tax increase.

Citizens Against Middle Class Tax Increases is the fourth group formed to oppose Proposal 1.

The Legislature placed the plan on the ballot to raise the sales tax from 6 percent to 7 percent and remove the sales tax on fuel. It would generate $1.2 billion more per year for roads.

New group leader John Yob says it's "wrong to ask ... middle-class families to foot the bill."

The coalition backing the proposal has changed its name to Safe Roads Yes.

The Small Business Association of Michigan endorsed the bipartisan proposal Thursday, saying it isn't "perfect" but will "do the job."
