4-Vehicle Pileup Causes Multi-Mile Backup On I-275

CANTON (WWJ) - A multi-vehicle accident reduced traffic to a crawl along a busy section of I-275 just as the morning rush hour was getting underway Friday.

The accident happened around 6:50 a.m. on northbound I-275 at Plymouth Road, just before the ramps to I-96 and M-14 in Canton Township.

At least four vehicles were involved in the accident, although other circumstances weren't immediately clear.

"Two guys are out here with brooms and they are sweeping up the freeway, almost at a frantic pace like it's a video that's sped up a little bit, and there's another police officer who is waving everyone through on the right shoulder," WWJ's Bill Szumanski reported from above the scene in Chopper 950.

Wreckers called to clear the scene ended up getting stuck in the traffic backup, which stretched past Michigan Avenue. They finally reached the accident and the scene was cleared by 8:25 a.m.

It's not clear if anyone was injured.
