3rd Man Gets Probation In Ski Weekend Vandalism By U-M Frat

GAYLORD (WWJ/AP) - A former University of Michigan student has been placed on probation for two years for his role in a wild weekend of booze and ruin by a fraternity at a ski resort.

Daniel Orleans will have his record scrubbed if he stays out of trouble while on probation. He also must pay $5,000 restitution. He was sentenced Thursday for malicious destruction of property.

Otsego County prosecutor Mike Rola says Orleans admits throwing a desk off a first-floor balcony at Treetops Resort last January. Doors, furniture, fixtures and carpet were badly damaged when members of Sigma Alpha Mu fraternity spent the weekend.

Two other fraternity members have also received a sentence of probation and restitution. Alcohol-related charges are pending against the former president and treasurer of Sigma Alpha Mu.

Initially, Treetops estimated damages at $100,000. Managers now estimate $430,000 in costs from the Jan. 17-18 vandalism.
