1 Killed When Car Crosses Median, Hit By Truck Hauling Horse Trailer On I-96

LEROY TOWNSHIP (WWJ) - Authorities say one person has died in a crash that shut down I-96 for hours Monday morning in Ingham County.

Sheriff's investigators say a car headed westbound toward Lansing slowed, was hit from behind and crossed the median — veering into the eastbound lanes where it was struck by a pickup truck hauling a horse trailer.

Authorities say the driver of the car was killed instantly.

It was unclear if there were any animals in the trailer at the time. Tipsters say there was at least one additional car involved.

The eastbound side of the freeway was closed for more than four hours following the crash at around 8 a.m. — near mile marker 120, between Williamston and M-52, Stockbridge Road in Leroy Township — but reopened at around 1 p.m. At one point the westbound side was closed as well, but it has also since reopened.

Traffic came to a halt, with backups in the area stretching for about five miles.

The name of the victim, a Northville-area resident, is being withheld pending notification of the family. It was not immediately clear if there were any further injuries.

An investigation is ongoing.
