3 Teens Injured In Boat Explosion At Oakland County Marina

WATERFORD TOWNSHIP (WWJ) - Authorities say three teenage girls are recovering from serious burns after a boat they were in exploded at a Waterford Township marina.

The incident happened around 4:45 p.m. Saturday at the Cass Lake Dry Dock Marina on Chenlot Drive.

Investigators say gas vapors in the boat's engine compartment ignited while the vessel was refueling at the marina.

A 14-year-old Waterford Township girl received third degree burns and was rushed to Children's Hospital in Detroit; a 15-year-old West Bloomfield Township received second degree burns and was transported to St. Joseph Mercy Hospital; and a 13-year-old Waterford Township girl received first degree burns and was treated at the scene by paramedics.

The driver of the boat, a 56-year-old Waterford Township man, wasn't hurt.

The incident remains under investigation by the Oakland County Sheriff's Office Marine Division.
