3 Killed When Car Crashes Into Tree, Bursts Into Flames

DETROIT (WWJ) - Three men are dead after a fiery one car crash on the Detroit's east side.

According to Detroit fire officials, a car burst into flames after it hit a tree Tuesday afternoon in front of a home on Charlevoix at Lakewood. That's in the area of Conner and Mack Ave.

Authorities at this time are not saying what might have led to the accident.

One witness at the scene told WWJ's Stephanie Davis that the car — a Mercury Marauder — was traveling "very fast and erratically" when the driver apparently lost control of a vehicle, smashing into the tree.

"The car looks like now that it's melded into this tree," Davis reported.

Neighbors say it's not uncommon to see people speed down Charleviox, a one-way street.

Police had earlier said the victims were a woman and two men, but that information was later corrected.

The victims' names and ages were not immediately released.
