Police: 3 confirmed dead, 5 injured after shooting on Michigan State campus

Police: MSU shooting suspect dead from self-inflicted gunshot wound

EAST LANSING, Mich. (CBS DETROIT) - Michigan State University police confirm that three people have died and five others were injured.

A spokesperson with Sparrow Hospital in Lansing says the five victims all remain in critical condition.

In a press conference after midnight on Tuesday, police say the suspect was located and died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

"This truly has been a nightmare that we're living tonight but we have remained laser-focused on the safety of our campus, our students and the surrounding community," Lansing interim Police Deputy Chief Chris Rozman said at the press conference.

Michigan State Police say the Capitol Area Transportation Authority bus service is going around to the dorms and will take students to the Pavilian to be reunited with family.

According to a tweet at about 8:40 p.m. from the department, shots were fired near Berkey Hall. Police say the shelter-in-place has been lifted and there is no longer a threat to campus.

An alert sent shortly after 8:30 p.m. urged people to "run, hide, fight."

"Run means evacuate away from danger if you can do so safely, Hide means to secure-in-place, and Fight means protect yourself if no other option."

Brody Hall, Synder/Phillips Hall, Mason Hall, Abbot Hall, Landon Hall, the MSU Union and Berkey Hall have since been cleared.

In an update at 9:26 p.m., police say another shooting was reported at IM East Fitness Center. The center was being secured.

University officials say all campus activities are canceled for the next 48 hours, including athletics, classes and all campus-related activities.
