21-Year-Old Man Charged With Shooting Of Detroit Police Officer During Chase

DETROIT (WWJ) - A young Detroit man accused of shooting a police sergeant during a foot pursuit is facing a laundry list of charges.

It happened Monday night outside a gas station on Detroit's east side — the day after police say 21-year-old Marquise Cromer shot his father in the foot with a sawed off shotgun while the older man was eating dinner at their home on Dickerson, near Jefferson Ave., in Detroit — and also threatened his stepmother.

Police say Cromer fled and was tracked down by investigators late Monday when a tipster reported seeing him at a restaurant in the 15000 block of E. 7 Mile Road.

According to prosecutors, Cromer spotted police and ran to a Sunoco next door, firing a shot at police Sgt. Ken Steil as he approached. Steil — a 17-year veteran of the force — was struck in the shoulder and is said to be doing OK.

Cromer was arrested at the scene.

In connection with the Monday incident he's charged with the following: one count of assault with intent to murder; one count of resisting and obstructing police officer causing serious impairment; three counts of  resisting and obstructing a police officer; one count of possession of a short-barreled shotgun, and felony firearm.

Cromer was scheduled to be arraigned on those seven charges at Thursday in 36th District Court, having already been charged in the Sunday shooting.

He remains held on a $750,000 cash/surety bond.
