Trooper Injured In Suspected Drug-Fueled Crash On Detroit's West Side
DETROIT (WWJ) - A Michigan State Police trooper was injured in a crash on Detroit's west side that was caused by a man who police say was driving on a suspended license and under the influence of drugs.
The accident happened around 2:50 a.m. Wednesday on Fenkell and St. Marys streets, just east of the Southfield Freeway.
Sgt. Paul Flores said two troopers were heading eastbound on Fenkell on their way to assist with a traffic stop when they were t-boned by an SUV that drove through a blinking red light.
One trooper, who has been with the department for two years, was taken to the hospital with neck and back injuries. He was treated and released. The other trooper was not injured.
The SUV driver, a 31-year-old Inkster man, was cooperative with police but might have been under the influence of narcotics, said Flores. A further check on the driver revealed that he had four warrants and three current license suspensions. He was taken into custody and transported to the hospital for treatment of injuries sustained in the crash.
Hours after the incident, state police sent out a Tweet saying the crash "could have been worse if not for seat belts."
An investigation is ongoing.
