Student Dies After Double Shooting Near Michigan State University Campus

EAST LANSING (WWJ) - Police are searching for the gunman who opened fire on two Michigan State University students inside their apartment, killing one of them.

The shooting took place around 8:50 p.m. Friday at the off-campus Cedar Village apartment complex on Cedar Street near Grand River Avenue, less than a mile away from the school's East Lansing campus.

When police arrived on the scene, they found two victims suffering from gunshot wounds. Both were transported to Sparrow Hospital, although one victim was treated and released.

The other victim, identified as 20-year-old MSU sophomore Dominique Nolff, died early Saturday morning.

Nolff, known as DJ by family and friends, was taken off life support Saturday at a Lansing hospital after being shot at an apartment complex near campus.

Joey Eng Grew up with Nolff,  he says he can't believe his best friend is dead and has this message for the killer:

"They took away a great person from everybody, his mom, his brother, everybody who has ever known him - he is a person that will be greatly missed," said Eng.

Eng says family members made the decision to donate Nolff's organs. A decision that Eng believes his best friend would have wanted -- as he was such a giving person.

East Lansing police said this does not appear to be a random act, although they did not elaborate.

The suspected gunman remains at large. He is described as a 20- to 25-year-old African American, wearing tan pants, a black coat and black shoes or boots.

Anyone with information is asked to call East Lansing Police at 517-319-6884.
