2 Men Charged With Premeditated Murder In Killing Of National Guard Soldier During Carjacking
DETROIT (WWJ) - Two men are facing murder charges in connection with the killing of 20-year-old U.S. Army National Guard soldier during a carjacking on Detroit's west side.
Eric Chandler, 19, and Devon Berry, 21, are expected to be arraigned Friday morning on charges of felony murder and first degree premeditated murder in the July 28 death of Dontae Deshawn Norris. Berry is also charged with felony firearm, according to the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office.
The charges stem from an incident that occurred around 8:30 p.m. Monday in the parking lot of the Superland Market on Schoolcraft Road near Rutland Street, just east of the Southfield Freeway.
Prosecutors say Norris was getting out of his car when Berry pointed a gun at him and announced a carjacking. Berry and Chandler got into stolen vehicle and started to drive away when Norris jumped on the car and held onto its roof. At that time, prosecutors allege Berry fatally shot Norris before driving away.
Norris, of Westland, was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival from a gunshot wound to the chest.
According to reports, Norris worked at Superland Market with at least one of the suspects, and the shooting might have stemmed from an earlier argument between the men.
Authorities have yet to comment on further circumstances surrounding the shooting.
