2 Injured In Macomb County Gas Explosion

RICHMOND TOWNSHIP (WWJ) - Two people were hurt in an explosion Tuesday in Macomb County.

According Ltn. John Michalke with the Macomb County Sheriff's office, a preliminary investigations showed a contractor digging on a farm to lay a drain tile struck a gas line causing the blast.

The explosion — which happened at around 1 p.m.  along 33 Mile Road near Place Road in Richmond Township — destroyed the digging machine and sent two people to the hospital.

Sheriff's deputies responded to the scene along with fire and EMS personnel. Built in safety valves were automatically activated to shut off the leaking gas. A plume of dark smoke was seen from miles away.

Both hospitalized victims were reported in stable condition later in the day and were expected to be OK.  There were no evacuations, no one else was hurt and no further damage was reported, Sheriff's officials said.

Gas company personnel remained at the scene for repairs.  An investigation continues.
