2 Detroit Cops Injured In Suspected Drugged Driving Crash

DETROIT (WWJ) - Detroit police say two officers are hospitalized after their patrol car was broadsided by another vehicle on the city's west side.

The accident happened around 12:20 a.m. Friday as the patrol car was headed southbound on Warwick Street near Elmira Street, in a neighborhood south of Plymouth and Evergreen roads.

As the cruiser passed the intersection, it was broadsided by an older model Chevy Impala traveling eastbound on Elmira. The impact was so strong, the scout car came to rest in the front yard of a home in the 10000 block of Warwick.

Police spokesperson Adam Madera said the driver of the Impala, a 26-year-old man, ignored a yield sign at the intersection.

Both officers were transported to Sinai Grace hospital, although their current conditions are unknown. Two female passengers in the Impala were also taken to the hospital in unknown conditions.

Madera said the driver of the Impala was arrested for "narcotics on person, traffic warrant, open alcohol containers and possible operating while intoxicated charge pending."

The crash remains under investigation.
