2 Charged In Connection With Clinton Township Party Store Murder

CLINTON TWP. (WWJ) - A man and a woman are facing charges in connection with the murder of a Clinton Township party store owner.

The Macomb County Prosecutor's Office issued arrest warrants Tuesday for Ujuan Burton and Shardae Burt in connection with the death of 50-year-old Emil Salem, who was shot and killed in a robbery at his store last Thursday.

Burton, 31, of Oak Park, is facing four counts, including felony murder, armed robbery and firearms charges.  Clinton Township Police said he would be released from a Toledo Hospital Tuesday and transported back to Michigan to face the charges. Police said he was wounded in an exchange of gunfire with Salem.

Burt, 30, of Detroit, is facing a charge of accessory after the fact. She's accused of driving the getaway vehicle, to taking Burton to the hospital.

Police responded Thursday night to a burglar alarm at Bernie's Market, on Garfield Road just north of 17 Mile Road, to find Salem on the floor with a gunshot wound to the head. Officers also found a trail of blood presumably left by the shooter as he fled the scene, leading investigators to check hospitals for suspects. Burton was identified on Saturday.
